Hot Peppers!

I received some beautiful differently colored peppers in my weekly CSA delivery… thank you Farmer Christopher Totman! So before they went to waste I thought I would make a harissa (Tunisian hot chilli sauce). I used my hands to take out all of the seeds, and not long after I made it, which I think turned out delicious my hands were burning, especially my finger tips. Then I felt under my eye burning and I went to bed with a small red welt on my face (sort of looked like a hive). When I woke up the next morning and put my contacts in suddenly my eye was burning, and I realized my hands were still burning! Long story short… use gloves when you handle hot peppers!

  • Blended or finely chopped hot peppers
  • Olive oil
  • Fresh cilantro
  • Salt
  • Garlic

You can either blend the peppers or just let them blend into the oil.

Farm Fresh in the Boroughs

Farm Fresh in the Boroughs
Most diseases like diabetes and obesity are connected to diet, which disproportionately affect low-income families. To help combat the fast food culture we live in, there are some really great programs happening around the city. This NY Times article talks about a new farm share program in the Bronx, which links city dwellers from low-income areas in New York City with upstate farms and a chance for them to own shares in the farm.

There’s something for everyone from the boroughs… here‘s a farmer’s market in Queens that provides the community with fresh squash, lettuce, eggplant, and peppers where fast food reigns… and for my fellow Brooklynites, a food coop grows in Brooklyn!

Check out the video about the farm share program.
